A customer asked me for "green wine," and I admit that I was stumped for a second. I had never had anyone ask me for that in English before. When it finally clicked, off we went to the Portuguese section for "Vinho Verde".
"Fio a Fio" translates to "thread by thread," a cultural homage to the embroidery and lace crafted in the area. The winery incorporates those same skills from that artisanal heritage into its winemaking process: precision, craft, patience, and care.
This wine consists of 42% Fernão Pires, 41% Loureiro, and 17% Alvarinho. When the grapes reach the optimal ripening stage, they are manually harvested. There is some skin contact with cold maceration for 36 hours. After multiple fermentation processes and gentle pressing, the juice goes into stainless steel vats, and then into oak barrels sur lie for 3 months. The result is a brightly acidic and vibrant wine with layers of white flowers, ripe white nectarine, pale tropical fruits and yuzu.
A pretty wine on its own, or it would pair well with anything from a raw seafood bar. You can go to the opposite extreme and pair it with fried or baked fish. Also, fresh salads with leafy greens pair well with this green wine.
