This staff pick was inspired by a recent adventure of mine: doing yoga with kangaroos. I thought that I had to travel all the way to Australia to get up close to a kangaroo. It turns out I just needed an open mind, a car, and an afternoon free.
A similar mentality applies to Australian wines: have an open mind, a wine glass, and an evening free. Enter d'Arenberg, a winery established in McLaren Vale in 1912 by Joseph Osborn after he sold his prized racehorses to purchase the vineyards. The Footbolt Shiraz was a homage to the pride of his stable.
With a namesake like that, the wine had better live up to it. And it does! Classic style Shiraz: rich, ripe, tannic, and great length. Black plums, cherries, and blackberries integrated with mocha, liquorice, and black pepper fill out the palate. Tannins are ripe, rich, and juicy with beautifully balanced acids. This pairs perfectly with a grilled pork loin, an abundant charcuterie board, or artisanal pizzas that are light on the sauce but generous with other toppings.
