Back in 2018, I was invited to attend a Malbec de Cahors Seminar hosted by fourth generation Cahors vintner Bertrand Gabriel Vigouroux and winemaker Paul Hobbs; yes, that Paul Hobbs. They talked about the rich history and the unique terroir of the region. Cahors is one of the oldest wine growing regions of France dating back to Ancient Roman times. The soils are heavily dense with clay and limestone creating super tannic wine grapes. These two men decided to embark on a joint venture that combines the long standing traditions of the area with modern winemaking techniques. The result is 'Crocus Wines'; named for the wild flowers that grow in the region, which produces the spice saffron.

This Malbec opens with an expressive nose brimming with fresh black and red fruit aromas of gooseberry, strawberry, and blackcurrant. The palate is lively and juicy, showcasing bright elderberry and mulberry flavors, balanced by smooth tannins and a subtle touch of white pepper on the finish.

Food pairings include duck confit, Indian lamb dishes, flank steak with chimichurri, and grilled Portobello and eggplant stacks.
