Those of you familiar with my recommendations know I love to find older vintages on our shelves, eager to learn how these wines have developed. We were pleased enough with a quick sample to bring in the 2017 Basilico Crua, but I had to take one home and dive a little deeper- it's been maturing for almost a decade and has stories to tell!
This intriguing wine is made with organically farmed Aglianico grapes from vineyards situated on the slopes of an extinct volcano in Basilicata, Italy—between the toe and heel of the boot, where the three stripes would be if Adidas made the boot - and aged in "tufa" caves carved from the same volcanic rock in the 15th century.
Aglianico del Vulture wines are known for being bold, rich, and even slightly smoky, with firm structure and minerality. These characteristics are on display in this offering, but the ageing keeps them in check—the time in bottle harmonizes the elements into a sublime, savory symphony.
We prepared a quick red sauce with spicy sausage and olives to pair with our bottle, and the match was perfect! The subtle smokiness worked especially well with the spicy, tangy sauce.
And, like all our staff picks, the price is right! This is a wine for aficionados, for nado lotta money!
